Reflections

Greetings to all.  Nice flat water over the last couple of days.  An incoming noontime tide made for a nice up-current workout.  Music makes the the time pass pleasantly and is often a great training partner.  My setup includes my iPhone, Pandora (Jack Johnson and Donovan Frankenreiter usually) and a Seal Line waterproof case - which I know works well.  I never use earphones mostly because I like to be able to hear boats that may be coming up behind me and I can hear the tunes well enough.  The link to the highly recommended E case is

Clear Water

Greetings to all.  Lunchtime paddle yesterday in the sun and 'warmth.'  One of the great things about paddling in winter, besides having Creek and the river to myself (mostly), is how clear the water seems to get.  Now there may or may not be an oceanographic reason but the water appears cleaner and clearer than during the summer months.  The water is colder - I found out first hand yesterday.  Coming back around Priest Point my skeg found a branch that I overlooked as I was cutting the corner.  I can tell you that stops you pretty quickly and effectively!  Fortunately the water was only a foot or so deep but was still refreshing! Btw water temp 41F...brrr.  As it turns out my wet suit outfit worked well and paddling home kept me warm.  Clear water pic below.

Also our friend Casso from Sydney commented that they are in a heat wave downunder - 107F - as he noted BIG difference!  Below is a pic of Casso riding his DEEP in the heat - is that Longy Casso?

Lunchtime Paddle

Greetings to all.  Quick lunchtime paddle yesterday. Much warmer - all the way up to 48F!  Woo hoo.  Forecast is more of the same through weekend - I even noticed a 60F forecasted for Saturday.  Thinking about a paddle to downtown - Davis' pub as the destination - Any takers?

Shared the creek with kayak fishermen who I often see out and about.  Great to see folks out particularly this time of year.  I hope they were biting!

2013 Icebreaker

Greetings.  Well first lunchtime paddle of 2013 is complete!  Bit of a breeze and a bit chilly but sunny - Vitamin D is good!  The old 14 foot Naish Glide makes a great icebreaker!  I'm certain that when Iggy (God rest his soul) designed the board's rocker an icebreaker was the last thing he was thinking.  But...the rocker slides above the ice and then allows the board's width and my, ahem, weight to nicely compress and break the ice beneath.  Granted the ice isn't that thick and i didn't have far to get to open water thanks to an ice-breaking pontoon boat disguised as a duck blind!  Anyway good to get out.  A couple of pics below:

Happy New Year 2013!!

2013 Greetings!  Spent the break in the midwest so missed on the dusting Annapolis received.  I thought I could find a board and get out on the Missouri river but the river was low and icy where I was - so no New Years paddle.  Plus it was very cold - at least for me - between 9 and 16 F!  Upon our return I see the Creek has a bit of ice!  Oh well time to think new thoughts - warm thoughts.  So I found some good vids from Seabreeze.com.au - sure missing summertime in Sydney!  Enjoy and think warm!
